A 19-month boy is dead, and his mother’s boyfriend is in custody.

The investigation began about 8:15 p.m. Friday when Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were called to the emergency room at UAB Medical Center West on a report of a child who had been brought in with multiple injuries.

The toddler – Gabriel Alonso – was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, said sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money.

Few details have been released. The family lived in McCalla.

Money said a 27-year-old was taken into custody.

The evidence will be presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office in Bessemer, which will determine the charges.
